Stockholm County Council’s (SCC’s) mandate is to ensure that its residents have access to healthcare and public transport as well as preventing health problems. The remit also includes responsibility to support R&D within the health care sector.
The geographical area includes 26 municipalities of various sizes and characters. The total number of inhabitants is 1.9 million, representing over one fifth of the total Swedish population. SCC has around 45 000 employees and is thereby one of the biggest employers in Sweden. This is an important aspect and serves as basis for the development of SLL Innovation. 96 percent of the employees work in healthcare. Approximately 80 percent of the employees are women.
Dual Mission
SLL Innovation was established in 2010 as the main innovation system within in SCC and has a dual mission. The system being unique in Sweden, has been developed since 2003 and will now be implemented throughout all of SCC:s activities for the first time. It is also unique in that sense that the system not only supports traditional R&D projects, but first and foremost, it supports the employees own ideas of improvement.
SLL Innovations’ first assignment is to identify, develop and commercialize ideas and innovations created by SCC’s staff. The second assignment will be to act as a gateway towards mainly Medtech companies and entrepreneurs who wants to establish and cooperate with SCC in developing their products and services.
High Practice Products
Products being produced within the system are mainly of the character High Practice Product. This category of products are mainly user driven innovations and often class I MDD (Medical Devices Directives). The system is based on decentralisation and each large inner city hospital is equipped with an innovation advisor and product developer by SLL Innovation. All employees are thereby offered the possibility to contact an innovation advisor and in full discretion, share and discuss their ideas for a new product or service. If the innovation does not already exist on the market and has the possibility to be commercialized, SLL Innovation has the competence to assist the idea carrier with market introduction, handle IPR and market research.
Product development
Companies and entrepreneurs with an interest to establish contacts and cooperation with the health care is also welcome to contact SLL Innovation. We offer a range of services to Medtech companies such as clinical testing, Innovation Crypt®, CE-branding and risk analysis. SLL Innovation’s main purpose is to assist in the process of commercialisation of products and services and is therefore not to consider a gateway for selling products to the Swedish health care.
